    A major expansion of SunRail is in East Central Florida’s future, now that the transit system’s governing board has voted to launch a study of such a venture and to determine its cost. The Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission April 24 unanimously decided to take the next steps to make the Sunshine Corridor a reality. “We are on the cusp of moving ahead to the next phase,” Florida Department of Transportation District 5 Secretary John Tyler told the panel.

The new Aldi store at 2880 Howland Blvd. occupies the space formerly used by Winn-Dixie.

    With the prospect of enlarging Deltona’s tax base and its commercial sector, the Deltona City Commission has tentatively approved the rezoning of a parcel almost adjacent to Amazon. The commission April 21 voted 6-1 to change the zoning of 36.46 acres along North Normandy Boulevard at the intersection with Rhode Island Avenue from single-family residential (R1AA) to Mixed Use Planned Unit Development (MPUD). Commissioner Stephen Colwell cast the dissenting vote.

    A mixed-use development known as Halifax Crossings, to be situated next to Halifax/UF Health, is on the drawing board. The Deltona Planning & Zoning Board approved the draft development agreement project April 16 and agreed to submit it to the City Commission for adoption and realization. Halifax Crossings will include hundreds of new apartments, a wellness center, offices and retail space on 109.7 acres adjacent to the hospital.
