Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images The Cubs gave rookie Matt Shaw the third-base job out of Spring Training. The 2023 first-round pick had hit well at all levels of the minor leagues. Unfortunately, that hasn’t yet translated to MLB performance. In 18 games so far this year and 68 plate appearances, Shaw is batting .172/.294/.241 with one home run and 18 strikeouts. He has walked 10 times. He was hitting LHP well (.894 OPS in 22 PA), but doing almost nothing vs. RHP (.339 OPS in 46 PA).

Matt Marton-Imagn Images Last week, I wrote about how MLB apparently botched a rain delay in a Phillies/Braves game in Atlanta. They made the teams wait two hours and 45 minutes even though this was getaway day for both teams. It was a divisional game and could have easily been suspended and finished in June, when the Phillies next come to Atlanta.

Those things all went right Monday night in San Diego. Unfortunately, because of rough outings from three different Cubs relievers, that did not lead to victory. Instead, because the pen was hit for eight runs in less than two total innings, the Cubs lost to the Padres 10-4.
