As a hunter, competition shooter and handloader, I need to know the velocity of factory and handloads. I suffered the many frustrations of shoot-through chronographs but all the frustration vanished when I used the LabRadar LX compact Doppler radar chronograph. The small unit sits next to the gun muzzle and uses Doppler radar technology to capture the velocity. The unit captures archery, air guns, pistol and rifle velocities.

; . I didn’t see a need for a silencer a few years ago because Hollywood has twisted our perception of silencers into something used by assassins and those intent on evil.

; . I have been dreaming of an antelope hunt for 40 years, but one thing or another stopped me from committing. I don’t know why, as I am surrounded by the speed goats every time I leave the house.

;. The Henry Improved was the first rifle to be called a Winchester, but its story started years before. Mr. Oliver Winchester was an excellent dress shirt maker and an even better investor. ;. You won’t find too many shooters urging their friends to go plinking with their .45-70 rifles. In reality, most shooting becomes a test of testosterone levels! No, thanks! I shoot the .45-70 Government competitively in three different styles of matches. Each match is timed. The faster I run the gun while keeping the bullets on the steel target, the higher I am in the standings. The notorious, punishing .45-70 recoil is not my friend. The first match is long distance using a single-shot rifle.

;. I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions — I make hunting season resolutions. Every year, my resolutions include improving my rifle’s accuracy and talking to other hunters; I’m not the only one. Not everything has to cost a month’s pay to improve. In most cases, small details make a difference. You would be surprised at how often the screws holding the action to the stock are loose, including new rifles straight from the box.

;. I will remember the day for the rest of my life. It was Christmas morning, and all the presents were opened, or so I thought. In a grand gesture, my lovely wife swooped another hidden box out and handed it to me. In puzzlement, I opened it. Money was tight — we had two children to feed and the mice had to go next door for breadcrumbs! Okay, it wasn’t quite this bad but we had little in the way of extra folding money. So, it was a complete surprise when I unwrapped a shiny Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle.
