The sale of the Observer newspaper to Tortoise Media has been approved, it was announced on Friday. The move by the boards of its owner Scott Trust and the Guardian Media Group followed a 48-hour strike this week by journalists on the Observer and the Guardian in protest at the sale. The Scott Trust said it will invest in Tortoise Media, becoming a key shareholder, taking a seat on both its editorial and commercial boards.
US ambassador praises charity founded by Gordon Brown

The United States ambassador to the UK is to host a special reception to mark the work of a charity founded by former prime minister Gordon Brown. Jane D Hartley will praise the work of the Multibank, which helps to distribute clothes, bedding, baby, hygiene, toy and furniture through a network of local charities and care professionals. Ms Hartley says the Multibank is “one of the best tools we have to provide essential goods to the people who need them the most”.

Rail infrastructure workers stage 24-hour strike in London

Rail infrastructure workers are staging a 24-hour strike on Saturday in a dispute over issues including working practices. Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) at Rail for London Infrastructure walked out at 6am. The union said the industrial action will affect infrastructure repairs and maintenance on the Elizabeth Line rather than hit services. Transport for London said the strike will not affect services.
