    I always enjoy Andy Reiger’s columns and have learned a load about local history from them. Last Sunday’s (Nov 17th) column is a rare case of missing the mark. Every semester I survey my classes and confirm that many of our students work 20, 30, 40 hours per week. Many others care for their children or younger siblings, and still others are fulfilling their duty in National Guard on weekends. Majors and minors have become more proprietary, with fewer electives and more pressure.

The singling out of Israel as a malefactor has been skewered by Bill Maher, who highlighted a slew of other countries whose treatment of their enemies is demonstrably worse. Other commentators have pointed to the realities of the Middle East, including the de-Christianization of the region.

    A few years ago, colorful multilingual yard signs of “Hate Has No Home Here” popped up all over Norman. I applauded the sentiment: a response to the presence of a lot of hate and anger in our America. After having just observed the anniversary of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing, it seems timely to comment on what would counter the widespread antisemitism since the savage Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on Israel and the severe response. We’ll get to that.
