Some years ago I was returning to my island house in Maine, under a dark night sky, and I noticed that the wake of the boat was glowing. As far as I could tell, it was bluish in color. That was my first experience with bioluminescence. Later, I discovered that I could create that same oceanic glow simply by waving a stick or paddle in the water. Bioluminescence—the glow produced by fireflies, algae, and a few other organisms—is a beautiful and eerie phenomenon.
