Good morning. Unfortunately, I was traveling yesterday, and got caught up in the FAA’s ground stop, which caused more than 1,200 flights in the U.S. to be canceled and thousands more to be delayed. Fortunately, mine was in the latter category, and I am writing this while finally making my way back to New York.

The U.S. hit another grim record this week as new coronavirus cases reached a single-day high of nearly 60,000—a figure that the New York Times reported was the sixth single-day record in 10 days. On Thursday alone, Alabama, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, and Texas set all-time highs.

The U.S. is continuing its retreat from its grim July record of more than 70,000 new daily coronavirus cases. Yesterday, the New York Times reported 53,344 new cases and an average of 53,723 cases per day over the last week, a decline of 18% from the average two weeks earlier. Nationally, more than 5 million people have been infected with the coronavirus.
