MY VIEW of education is a very simple one. Education is empowering. Without education, or with an inadequate education, a child’s life chances are stunted. Education begins in primary school, and that is where the building blocks of education need to be established securely. Literacy and numeracy should be embedded in primary school, yet, after decades of ‘progressive’ education, it is clear that those teaching in primary schools are often not equipped to facilitate this.

Imagine a scenario in which Sir Keir Starmer wins the next election, and immediately sacks the chairman and board of the BBC, sits by as former ministers are arrested on charges of abuses of power, says he will depose Andrew Bailey, and makes the courts subservient to the EU. The public response, surely, would be one of outrage. Yet similar developments are taking place in Poland, and there has barely been a whimper, not least from Britain’s pro-EU fanatics.

Tom Fairless, the author of the original article, had written that Europeans were growing poorer while Americans were growing rich. Alas, Bouzou could only quibble with the data provided by Fairless, who, he claimed, should have used purchasing power per head statistics rather than simple GDP figures.
