The elephants are uninjured and wander about briefly, but are walked back to the zoo through a crowd of gaping passersby. Dropping a Load The incident occured at noon. The elephants were being transported by owner Morgan Berry to an event in Everett.

May is Historic Preservation Month, and this week HistoryLink looks at some of Washington's National Historic Landmarks. We begin with the state's first National Historic Landmark, Chinook Point - where Captain Robert Gray first saw the Columbia River - which was designated in 1961 along with American and English Camps on San Juan Island. In 1964 the Marmes Rockshelter was named a landmark, but it has since been submerged due to the construction of Lower Monumental Dam.

Its causes were many. A Republican-led Congress had spent away a $100 million Treasury surplus, mostly on enrichment programs for wealthy industrialists. The Sherman Silver Purchase Act undermined U.S. gold reserves, which led to skyrocketing inflation.
