Michael Clayton shudders when he recalls the night he came within a whisker of losing his best friend. It was two days before Christmas and his eight-year-old cat Frankie was in a bad way. He had been attacked by another cat and needed his eye urgently removed or he would have to be euthanised. The vet fee was almost $2,000 and Mr Clayton had no way to pay. After months of speculation over the future of Whyalla's steelworks, the South Australian government has forced the industrial plant into administration, putting an end to GFG Alliance's almost eight-years of ownership. The steelworks, which is Whyalla's largest employer, have been in crisis for months, after GFG failed to pay tens of millions of dollars in royalty payments to the state government, and millions of dollars to creditors and contractors.

A privately-funded search has begun at a former factory site in Adelaide's south-west in the hope of providing fresh information in a nearly 60-year-old cold case. Excavation began at the old Castalloy property in North Plympton on Saturday morning in an effort to search for the remains of the three Beaumont children, who disappeared in 1966. Independent state MP Frank Pangallo, who organised the private dig, said it was likely the last chance to conduct another search before the land was sold.
