The Power of First Steps: Navigating the Mental Health Needs of Black youth was the theme of a one-day conference Thursday in Sudbury. The aim is to advance inclusive, equity-based mental health care. It included a youth panel that talked about racism and the challenges they face. They also shared their thoughts on more culturally safe and responsive mental health care for black youth.

Two cyclists in Sudbury who have had their bikes stolen recently are sharing their stories. One said more secure bicycle lockers are available and should be placed downtown and in other public places, including city hall. Andrew Way is disabled, living with epilepsy and a back injury that is the result of a seizure. Way uses his bike as a mobility aid under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. “I have had my bike stolen before,” he said.

Human sex trafficking is a complex, often hidden, multi-jurisdictional crime. On Friday in Sudbury, a one-day conference focused on human trafficking, homelessness and addiction. The goal is to help people who work in social services learn more about how these issues are related and how to spot victims. Aura Burditt Aura Burditt, an outreach worker with the Salvation Army in London, spoke about spotting the signs of human trafficking.

May 1 marks one year since a Sudbury woman vanished in the New Sudbury area. Wendy Lafortune was last seen walking in New Sudbury. Now her family is planning a walk and vigil Saturday to raise awareness about the case and appeal for anyone with information to share it about Wendy and other missing women. Lafortune’s family said rather than a statistic, she is a mother, daughter, sister and friend.
