Rangers face what is pretty much a season-defining game when they take on Athletic Bilbao in the footballing cathedral of San Mames on Thursday night. Only a fool would write off their chances of pulling off another European upset - and if they were to do so, reaching another Europa League semi-final would be a phenomenal achievement. It would also give the club's power-brokers a real quandary over the next managerial appointment.

Wouldn't it be just like Rangers to now go and get a good result against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday after an abject showing and result against Hibernian at the weekend? In saying that, they will probably have to produce their best performance of the season to do so and the likelihood of being able to do that after such a dismal display on Saturday seems massively unlikely.

Rangers' 4-3 victory at Dens Park last weekend was as thrilling a game as you'll see in a long time and Barry Ferguson and his players do deserve credit for a comeback that appeared massively unlikely with 15 minutes to play. But as sweet as it was for the travelling Rangers fans in the end, they were made to suffer for large parts of the game and Ferguson acknowledged afterwards his team had allowed "old bad habits" to creep back in to their play.

Well, actually, he was born in Belgium and has lived and played there all his short life. Born to Greek parents in Genk, joining their academy and quickly accelerating through the ranks to make his first-team debut at the end of last season as a 16-year-old substitute against Cercle Brugge, before starting for the first time in a win over Royal Antwerp two weeks later.

What an incredible few days for Barry Ferguson and his team as they secured a Europa League quarter-final berth before recording a rare victory at Celtic Park against the champions in waiting. In a largely forgettable season, they have restored a measure of pride and positivity, meeting one of Ferguson's non-negotiable demands of displaying real character to show the supporters what they are truly capable of.
