The Covid-19 pandemic brought a renewed interest in an overlooked field of infection prevention: improving the hygiene of the air we breathe. There are benefits beyond reducing the risk of infections, such as reducing exposure to pollutants and improving cognitive performance by reducing CO2, which also make it appealing. Unfortunately, like many different aspects of the pandemic, this topic seemed to cause people to lose all their senses.

One of the most influential figures in the history of medical evidence is Doug Altman. Probably his most famous quote is:Never has this been more true than today. Philosophically speaking, more information should always trump less information so long as it can be interpreted in the correct manner. The key part here is, so long as it can be interpreted in the correct manner. And so lies the difficulty.

During a quieter shift in the children’s emergency department, I took the opportunity to teach some of our GP trainees. They had quite a lot of anxiety around knowing what is normal or not normal for little babies. This is appropriate anxiety, because they will see a lot (and I mean, a lot!) of little babies in general practice.
