Nov 22 Final official day of #COP29Azerbaijan The city is remarkably like Wellington weather wise swinging from day to day and occasionally lovely on a good day. But the NCQG negotiations are still pretty much deadlocked on the most important issue here, Finance, with no numbers on the table yet. And talks still stuck on many of the same issues they were stuck on at the beginning.

This is 1984 redux, but back then it was the left destroying left solidarity. This is an interesting line of questioning here from Journalist @samhusseini which perhaps points to the substantive legal sophistry underlying the U.S. position on Gaza, in particular wrt the legality of wholesale slaughter y Israel of Gaza’s civilian population with U.S. supplied weapons .

Thread Codicil: The brevity and lack of substance in the US Statement issued yesterday wrt @POTUS @joebiden’s discussions with @IsraeliPM Benjamin Netanyahu speaks volumes, as does today’s decision by the U.S. and several European Naval Powers to abandon efforts to contain the Houthis attacks on Merchant Ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In 2003 the US set a terrible Precedent by invading Iraq in response to 9/11.

This is not to detract from the horror of the war in Gaza. But rather to highlight an injustice against the children of Tigray which for reasons unfathomable was monumentally mismanaged by the peak bodies of the UN. And about which the truth is overdue in being investigated, revealed or even acknowledged by Western news media. The TPLF mounted its “revenge” war, cynically named “operation mothers of Tigray” was undertaken against the peoples of the Amhara and Afar regions of Tigray.

Dec 11This bit considers the language around equity which has been a very hot topic in many of the civil society discussions here in Dubai. Equity = fairness and the context here is about finding a way to acknowledge that the phase-out of fossil fuels inherently bumps up against and gives effect to the “differentiated rights and responsibilities” language in the UNFCCC framework convention.
