The first sign of spring is said to be the appearance of a robin. That sign is followed by the first sign that June has arrived: a Pride flag, festooned with what seems to be an ever-increasing number of colors and symbols, hoisted up the flagpole, right under (or alongside) Old Glory. For as long as most folks living in a civil society can remember, pride and lust have been counted among the infamous list known as the seven deadly sins.

The first sign of spring is said to be the appearance of a robin. That sign is followed by the first sign that June has arrived: An “official” gay flag, festooned with what seems to be an ever-increasing number of colors and symbols, foisted up the flagpole, right under (or alongside) Old Glory. For as long as most folks living in a civil society can remember, the sins of pride and lust were part of that shameful list known as the Seven Deadly Sins.

Plenty of Teslas zip through the suburbs outside New York City, where I live. Every so often, one has a bumper sticker — less a decoration than a plea for mercy. These stickers aren’t aimed at political opponents, but at the car owner's own tribe. The one in front of me recently read: “I bought this before Elon went crazy.” When Americans can put victimhood and hurt feelings behind, maybe we can get back to lightening up and enjoying a joke or two. That’s the new defense.

There certainly are a lot of Teslas driving all around the town where I live in the suburbs outside of New York City. And every so often, you spot one with a bumper sticker designed to ward off those who, despite seemingly being from the owner’s own “tribe,” might want to key—or even set on fire—the driver’s car: Image made using a YouTube screen grab. Of course, most Tesla owners are aligned with the very vandals who wish to send a message to Elon Musk and the Trump administration.
