The podcast format is well suited to investigative journalism, because there is room to delve deeply into complex stories with few limits on length.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in environmental investigations. French investigative journalist Stéphane Horel, who works for the newspaper Le Monde, was already interested in exposure to pollution, pesticides, and toxic products when these subjects were not considered sufficiently “noble” material for investigation. An ICIJ member since 2024, Stéphane Horel also investigates scientific disinformation and the influence of lobbies.

The investigations that caught our eye this year display the diversity that exists in the world of Francophone watchdog reporting. We have seen stories in a wide variety of formats, so much so that it seems that digital, video, and podcast investigations are now the norm, while print seems to be losing its dominance.
