    On April 20, 2010, the BP Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig exploded and released millions of liters of oil into the Gulf of Mexico — the largest oil spill in U.S. history. The explosion killed 11 crew members on the drilling platform, and the resulting spill devastated the gulf’s saltwater and shoreline habitats for fish, birds, sea turtles, and marine mammals.  At the time, Morgan Lehtinen was a 15-year-old high school student in Newmarket, Ontario, 1,200 miles (almost 2,000 km) away.

Lambs fell by 24p/kg on the week to an average of 271p/kg or £127/head and sold to £161/head for Texels or to 311p/kg for Beltexes, while cast sheep averaged £100/head and sold to £250 gross. Heavy ewes averaged £156/head, while light ewes averaged £92/head and sold to £135 gross.

    Farming Round-up Lambs at Newton Stewart yesterday were of improved quality, achieving an average of 284p/kg or £127/head and selling to £169 gross for a Charolais cross from Over Airies or to 313p/kg for Beltexes from Mount Pleasant. Cast sheep remained firm, topping at £189 for a Cheviot tup from Holm and Mules sold to £176 for Knockcoyd, while Blackies peaked at £82 for Balmurrie. Dairy cattle at Ayr on Tuesday topped at £1,250 for a freshly calved Holstein Friesian heifer from Ditton.

    Round-up Prime beef-bred heifers at Lanark yesterday averaged 306p/kg and sold to 348p/kg for a Limousin cross, while bullocks averaged 290p/kg and sold to 298p/kg for a Limousin, and cast beef and dairy cows averaged 196p/kg and 148p/kg respectively. New season lambs dropped slightly to an average of 290p/kg and sold to 348p/kg or £170/head, while cast ewes averaged £82/head and sold to £290 for a Texel.
