Sr. Margaret Eder recalls every challenge she watched a Chicago boy endure. Living with autism spectrum disorder, the young boy struggled academically and experienced bullying. After his mother had a stroke, he later cared for his ailing father as they fell into financial hardship. "It seemed like everything was against him," remembered Eder, 85, a Felician Sister of North America who lives in Chicago. Fortunately, the boy didn't shoulder these emotional burdens alone.

As Sr. Mumbi Kigutha stepped up to the microphone at Cambridge Recreation Center in Las Vegas on Oct. 14, she beamed at the audience seated before her. "Ever since I was a very small girl growing up in Kenya, I've always wanted to come to this city," announced Kigutha, a member of the Sisters of the Precious Blood and president of Friends in Solidarity, a Catholic ministry supporting religious work in South Sudan.

When Sr. Julia Walsh, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, ventured back to her family's Iowa farmland 17 years ago, the nostalgic hike nearly killed her. Tumbling off a 20-foot cliff, the then-25-year-old novice suffered injuries to her nose, jaw and hand, breaking "more (bones) than anyone could count," a nurse later told her. Through it all, Walsh's faith fueled her to endure.

Living in Washington, D.C., the member of the Religious of Jesus and Mary observed patterns in certain areas with school dropouts, teen pregnancies and low academic scores. "I looked out at my world and thought, 'There's a great injustice here. A quality education is not being delivered across the board,' " said Bourdon, 74, who previously worked as a teacher and director of the Religious of Jesus and Mary's volunteer program.

They had no rights, no say in anything, but they started fighting (for equality).
