U.S. Rep. Stephanie Bice of Oklahoma shared a personal reflection on a meaningful encounter with Pope Francis following news of his death on Monday. In a message posted on social media, Bice recounted meeting the pontiff during a visit to the Vatican in August 2023. She described the nervous anticipation she and her husband felt ahead of the meeting, and the peace that came from Pope Francis’ demeanor. “He greeted us both and gave us a blessing,” Bice wrote.

Cheyenne, OK’s Frank Lucas is the only current member of the state’s delegation who was in office at the time of the attack on the Oklahoma City federal building. Until 2003, when Oklahoma lost a congressional district, Lucas represented what was then Oklahoma’s 6th district, which included the east side of Oklahoma City and the site of the bombing. Like others in the delegation, Lucas was in Dallas the morning of the atrocity, attending a Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) hearing.

Don Nickles was a United States Senator when the Oklahoma City bombing took place on April 19, 1995. He served for four terms, representing Oklahoma from January 1981 to January 2005. Following his retirement from Congress, the Ponca City native founded the Nickles Group, a Washington, DC, consulting firm that he still runs today. Nickles was en route to Dallas to attend a BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) field hearing when he received word of the Oklahoma City bombing.
