A tax barrister is threatening to sue Dan Neidle for defamation. His work is too important to be silenced. We talk a lot about how the government should increase taxes on the super rich. We talk less about how the super rich dodge the taxes the government imposes. And that’s a pity, because tax dodging costs us billions – probably tens of billions – every year. One of the simplest ways to dodge tax is to pay a tax lawyer to tell you that you don’t need to pay tax on some income.

The Supreme Court rolled back trans rights 20 years without hearing from a single trans person. Last night, we brought those voices to the court. Munroe Bergdorf, Nadia Almada, India Willoughby and Victoria McCloud said what they would have said if the judges had let them speak, and told us what it’s like to live in the hostile world this judgment has made. The court blocked Victoria – the UK’s first trans High Court judge – from intervening in the case.

When Andy George spoke out about the fact that Black and Asian police officers are more likely to face investigations for misconduct, the police hit him with a misconduct investigation of his own. In October 2024, the officer who shot Chris Kaba in the head was cleared of murder. Less than a month later, the Metropolitan Police promoted him to inspector. As president of the National Black Police Association, it’s part of Andy’s role to talk about racism in the police.

You can tell whether a thing is important to lawyers because it gets its own Latin tag. One of them – perhaps the most important – is audi alteram partem, that both sides should be heard. You don’t actually need to be a lawyer to know it’s important. In our bones we all know it’s impossible for fairness to happen without hearing both sides of the story. Except that the Supreme Court forgot.
