The Winnetka Park District has begun On the Horizon, a new marketing campaign aimed at informing residents about the ongoing process of renovating Elder Lane and Centennial beaches. Starting in late June, the campaign has been used at farmer’s markets and Park District events to engage with residents curious about how the project is coming along.

Evanston’s Paws and Claws will be hosting its annual Rally for Rescues community event next month at Baker Park. Those looking to meet some furry friends and maybe take a new best friend home can stop by Baker Park on Evanston’s south side on Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.Executive Director Ashlynn Boyce said the event promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The Northwestern Wildcats are set to play a majority of their home football games at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, courtesy of a two-year, exclusive naming-rights partnership with Northwestern Medicine, the university-affiliated non-profit healthcare system. The move marks the first field naming partnership in the country following rule changes on the practice by the NCAA earlier this summer.

Evanston/Skokie School District 65 wrapped up the 2024 fiscal year with a $10 million budget deficit, topping the previous year’s $7 million debt. The D65 School Board received an update on the issue at the Aug. 5 meeting. A message to the D65 community sent from Superintendent Angel Turner a week before the meeting stated some bills for the previous fiscal year added to the deficit with the majority of expenditures falling on the transportation and special education budgets.

CHICAGO — The search to better understand his roots took Paul Thomas Harper to his late grandmother’s attic in St. Paul, Minnesota. There, among the letters and photographs, he found clues that, once plugged into a genealogy website, helped him trace his family tree back to his fourth great-grandfather. His name, Harper would learn, was Swansey Adams.
