|By Alex JacksonThe first of our new SkyTrain cars rolled into Burnaby this week, completing a journey of some 4,600 kilometres across Canada from Kingston, Ontario — just in time for the holiday season. Cranes offloaded the five-car Mark V train, across two separate days, onto the tracks at our SkyTrain Operations and Maintenance Centre, near Edmonds Station.

At least two homes and a shed have been destroyed by a fast-moving bushfire which cut off Dolphin Sands on Tasmania’s east coast on Sunday night. The blaze was downgraded from Emergency to Watch and Act and came under control as of Monday morning. The fire grew to around 112 hectares after being fanned by strong winds on Sunday night which are forecast to whip up again on Monday.

The Treasurer is shrugging off the latest Commsec State of the States report indicating Tasmania’s economy has fallen from first in the country to sixth. The quarterly snapshot assesses eight indicators: economic growth, retail spending, equipment investment, unemployment, construction work done, population growth, housing finance and dwelling commencements. Michael Ferguson says Commsec found there’s little to separate the top six states and territories in terms of economic performance.

More Tasmanians will be able to become posties, with nation-leading rule changes allowing anyone with a car licence to drive new electric trikes as of December. Australia Post already has around 90 three-wheelers delivering mail around Tasmania – they’re a big upgrade on the traditional motorbike with room for 100 small parcels and 1200 letters at a time.

Jeremy Rockliff has given former Attorney-General Elise Archer a deadline of 9am Monday to decide whether she’ll guarantee supply and confidence as an independent – or he’ll request the Governor issue writs for an election.
