His notable characters included fictional retired ballplayer Chico Escuella (author of the tell-all book Bad Stuff ‘Bout the Mets), the president of the New York School for the Hard of Hearing (who shouted Weekend Update headlines as Chevy Chase delivered them), various Nerds and Coneheads, and Black public figures from Louis Armstrong to Bob Marley to Idi Amin.
