Inland reserve hailed as 'vital' refuge for gulls

A nature reserve in a landlocked county has become a "vital" roosting site for five endangered species of gull. The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust said its Hilfield Park Reservoir Nature Reserve, between Elstree and Bushey, Hertfordshire, had become a refuge for the seafaring birds, including herring gulls, which are currently in decline. The trust said that although they were commonly known as "seagulls", scientifically "there is no such thing".

A baby bank that hands out bundles of items said it has paused receiving donations of toys and clothes after being "overwhelmed and inundated" with kind gifts. Bedford charity Faces, which supports children and families, said it's bank currently helped about 1,200 families a year. It believed some items were "over offered" because people were having a pre-Christmas clear out".
Volunteer emergency response pilot scheme expands

A volunteer emergency response scheme has expanded after more helpers were recruited to work alongside an NHS ambulance service. The Beds and Herts Emergency Critical Care Scheme (BHECCS), has partnered with the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST) since March 2024, attending more than 500 calls, including medical emergencies like cardiac arrests and traumatic injuries. The pilot started with one team in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, and now a second in Welwyn Garden City has been set up.

Road closes after large tree falls on car

A large tree has fallen onto a car and blocked part of a main road after Storm Bert hit the East of England. An eyewitness said she saw it had come down on the A6 in Milton Ernest, Bedfordshire, at about 10:20 GMT. Bedford Borough Council said the road remained closed between Radwell Road and New Road. Ashton Lamb, from the village, said it landed on a vehicle leaving the driver "shock up" and she was worried the strong winds might cause other trees to fall in the area.

A kitchen was badly damaged in a fire after an air fryer was accidently left on a hob. Essex Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to a bungalow in Meadow Way, Jaywick, at 06:58 GMT on Saturday and when it arrived crews found the home full of smoke. A family and its dog escaped unharmed before firefighters arrived.

A "dangerous" man obsessed with explosives, who once asked to throw a grenade on TV show Jim'll Fix It, has been jailed for causing an explosion at his family home. Matthew Haydon, 48, injured his hands and chest in the blast in Loring Road, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, on 10 April 2023. Jailing him at the Old Bailey for four and a half years with a four-year extended licence period, Mr Justice Johnson said Haydon knew the dangers of what he was doing but was "prepared to run that risk".
