I was really excited to pick up Fantastic Four: 1234, because I traditionally love Grant Morrison’s superhero work, and Jae Lee is just such a unique and incredible artist. Sadly, I was not a huge fan of this short limited series, especially when compared to Morrison’s concurrent work of revamping Marvel’s Merry Mutants in New X-Men (2001).

What a pleasant surprise! After seeing the new Thunderbolts* film in theaters a few weeks ago, I was excited to dive into this Thunderbolts Epic Collection trade paperback… and it did not disappoint! Filled with compelling villains-turned-heroes, bonkers battles with deep cut baddies, and some salacious relationship drama, Targeted for Death collects an under-appreciated and surprisingly fun run of Thunderbolts.

Arghhhh!!! I am disappointed. I was really, truly hoping to love this series, because I think Sabir Pirzada is a wonderful writer. His work on Ms. Marvel and Cult of Carnage: Misery was awesome, making me excited to pick up this trade. Unfortunately, Spirits of Vengeance: Vengeance Unchained was a convoluted jumble of disparate stories, very well written on a page-by-page basis by Pirzada, but not successful in forming any meaningful connective tissue that made me want more.

I must admit that I did not read the Venom War event as it was coming out. I love Venom, and Carnage, and Spidey of course, but it just felt like a very big, convoluted event that I didn’t NEED to read to understand future comics. However, I have been loving reading the trade paperbacks from the Venom War event, and this trade of Venom War: Zombiotes & Venom War: Venomous is no different. It is so fun, and gives some great page time to beloved female characters who always deserve more spotlight.

I love Jean Grey, and I was so happy with how her journey as the Phoenix ended during the Fall of Krakoa—saving mutantkind, defeating Enigma, and discovering the truth about her identity as the Phoenix Force and her connection to Hope Summers. So, of course, I was incredibly excited about Stephanie Phillips’ Phoenix solo series that debuted as part of the X-Men’s new “From The Ashes” relaunch.
