Here’s the thing: I rarely laugh. I smirk at jokes in movies. I chuckle a few times at something like The Office (I’m not humorless). But it’s hard for me to really laugh. Things that make other people crack up—let’s say a 6-8 on the humor scale of 10—still leave me in the 1-2 range. But the writing of Harrison Scott Key makes me belly laugh—like put-the-book-down, my-wife-checks-to-see-if-everything-is-okay, I-can’t-control-myself laugh. I didn’t know I could laugh at books, but here I am.

In college I worked at a regional pizza place in the Midwest that specialized in “fresh and ready” pizza, and I can assure you they were only sometimes ready and never fresh. Some nights when I managed the shop, we would run out of pizza dough. It’s hard to explain to potential customers that a pizza shop has no pizza. But I never really cared. The worst people could do was yell at me, and I have parents. I’ve been yelled at. These incidents were not life-threatening.

Soon after Wendell Berry was married, his father mentioned to him: “Well, you got a good girl.” The younger Berry nodded along, “I know it.” To which the elder Berry blurted out, “Well you don’t deserve a damn bit of credit for it.”  Reflecting on this conversation, Berry notes, “You see, we don’t have enough sense to make these decisions. Somehow, you just get led to where you’re supposed to be, if you’re willing to submit.” I don’t like that last “s” word. Submit. No thanks.

Black Mountain, NC. The liberal arts seem like a lost cause. We live in a modern world. Our goal is to be successful, to pursue a life where one’s value is rooted in a job and output and paycheck. Just this week, I heard someone wax eloquently about homeschooling his child, because “much of what they learn in school isn’t practical.” Poetry and history—when did that lead to getting paid? Leisure and contemplation? Yuck. Sounds lazy. Get to work.
