Warwick North Little League’s Big Blue Bug team won the Majors championship last week when it topped 401 Painting & Construction 7-6 in the title clash. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Big Blue Bug’s offense would step up and score four runs to regain the late advantage. Thomas Beaulieu drove in three runs on a two-out triple and Nathan Swiczewicz later knocked him in to make it 7-4.

Fresh off his championship win as the Cranston East boys volleyball coach, Jhamal Diggs will be sticking around for the upcoming winter as he was hired as the school’s new boys basketball coach. Diggs has grown into one of the most recognizable young coaches in Rhode Island. He coached the East girls from 2019-2021 and helped revive the program as the Bolts reached the Division II playoffs and open state tournament in consecutive years.

Elmwood Sports defeated Wein-O-Rama in a 5-4 comeback to win the Cranston Western Little League Majors Championship last week at Varrato Field. Wein-O-Rama led 4-2 heading into the third inning, but Elmwood would get back-to-back home runs from Kameron Monahan and Nazlin Benzan to tie things up. Elmwood got the game-winning run in the fourth when Thomas Glasgow stole home. Elmwood took an early 2-0 lead when Monahan drove in Glasgow and later scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.

The spring sports season is officially closed as the final championships took place last weekend. Beacon Media had two of its teams clinch championships, as the Cranston East boys volleyball team shocked North Kingstown and the Bishop Hendricken baseball team defended its title. Starting with East, what an unbelievable game that was. I know there could be some recency bias here, but that was the best volleyball game I have ever covered.

For the second straight season, the Bishop Hendricken baseball team is Rhode Island’s Division I state champion after sweeping the Cumberland Clippers in two games in last week’s title series. The Hawks won the second game 12-2 on Sunday at Rhode Island College to run away with the trophy. The Hawks led in a 3-2 dogfight heading into the sixth inning but would blow the lead open by tacking on five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run by senior Braeden Campbell.
