    The Bishop Hendricken volleyball team was swept by Cranston East 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-21) in Tuesday’s Division I Semifinals to see its season come to a close. The Hawks finished the regular season 9-9 overall to qualify for the postseason and ran into the red-hot Bolts, who swept Chariho in the quarterfinals. Hendricken earned a 3-1 win over Classical in the first round, when they were led by Andrew Ramos with 22 kills while Zach Roebuck added 14 of his own.

    It’s been a whirlwind few weeks covering our high school sports teams as they are grinding through their respective playoffs. We’re now entering the home stretch of the school sports calendar with the final games scheduled (for now) this Sunday. As expected, our softball teams have been dynamite, and as of Wednesday, we’re down to two in Cranston East and West.

    After clinching the division title, the Cranston West golf team moved on to the Rhode Island Interscholastic League State Championships last week at Cranston Country Club and wrapped up a seventh-place finish. Eric Whitlock, Jack Marques and Michael Farina all shot 162 between the two days. Josh Smith shot a 163, Jagger Dion a 165 and Zach Smith a 167 to round things out.

    The Cranston East boys tennis team reached the Division III Championship for the second straight year as it took on top-seeded Providence Country Day last Sunday at Slater Park. The Knights were unbeaten against DIII opponents this season and cruised past Johnston/Scituate 4-0 in the semis. PCD left little doubt who the best team in the division was as it went on to sweep the Bolts 4-0 as well.

    The Bishop Hendricken outdoor track and field team won its 47th Class A Championship last week in Coventry. It was also its 47th consecutive title as well for the Hawks as they edged second-place La Salle. Hendricken’s David Hayes won the 1,500 run while teammate Jack Moretta took first in the 3,000. Carson Dean took first in the pole vault, while Jakob Reyes won the high jump. “These meets are always difficult. La Salle is a great team and we weren’t able to beat them indoors.
