Although the atomic bomb was ultimately used on Japan, the Manhattan Project was primarily driven by the fear that the Germans might get there first. After late 1944, though, when German defeat became inevitable, the focus switched to Japan.

The dropping of two atomic bombs by the United States on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki remains one of the most controversial events of the twentieth century. They were preceded by the firebombing of Tokyo, an attack that was in many ways even more destructive.

Unlike the Hebraization of the land, there were no committees involved in its Arabization. In History of Cartography, J.B. Harley and David Woodward write that “mapmaking was one of the specialized intellectual weapons by which power could be gained, administered, given legitimacy and codified.” This wasn’t the case with the Islamic conquerors, though, who projected power in other ways.

The story of the old-new renaming of the land begins with the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF), who between 1872 and 1878 mapped Palestine “from Dan to Beersheba,” collecting around 9,000 places names and names of geographical features. Like others before them, they realized that the study of Arabic place-names was the key to identifying ancient sites – as we’ll see in the second part of this article, in many cases the Arabic name preserved the earlier Hebrew.
