With the league crown and a 12th-straight NCAA Tournament berth at stake, the first-seeded Seawolves (15-4, 8-0 CAA) hosted the second-seeded No. 23 Drexel Dragons (14-4, 7-1 CAA) at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday for the 2025 CAA Championship title game.

In a preseason interview with The Statesman, Joe Spallina — head coach of the No. 20 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team — expressed surprise that another team, outside of his own, received a vote as the preseason favorite in the 2025 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll. Since the Seawolves joined the conference in 2023, this year’s poll marked the first time they were not unanimously picked as the preseason favourites by opposing coaches.

Just over a week ago, the No. 22 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team was defeated by unranked Colorado. A controversial call by the officials that gave the Buffaloes a fresh shot clock with less than two minutes remaining allowed for the upset to materialize and left head coach Joe Spallina irate. Bad call or not, the loss worsened the Seawolves’ record to 5-3, marking their worst start to a year since 2019.

A rough stretch for the Stony Brook men’s basketball team is getting increasingly worse. The Seawolves finished this past season with an 8-24 overall and 4-14 conference record — the program’s worst mark since the 2007-08 campaign — after losing four starters and their sixth man to graduation and the transfer portal. However, busy offseasons are certainly not behind head coach Geno Ford, who will now be tasked with remedying the exits of at least eight of the previous 14 rostered players.
