WASHINGTON -- The federal government ended the first quarter of fiscal 2025 with a deficit nearing $711 billion with the Treasury Department reporting a $86.7 billion monthly deficit in December. The Treasury Department on Tuesday released a Monthly Treasury Statement highlighting government spending and receipts for the current fiscal year through December 2024. The federal government's fiscal year starts Oct. 1 and goes through Sept. 30.
