AN Alicante fruit and vegetable distributor could be fined up to €3 million for a scam involving bananas. The company has been accused of passing off bananas as premium platanos from the Canary Islands. The Guardia Civil said the firm sold nearly 2,000 tons of bananas in 2023 alone with no documentation as to where they originated from.

A NEW April passenger record has been set at Alicante-Elche airport with over 1.7 million travellers using the facility. Over a third of the total came from the United Kingdom. The April figure was the highest for the month since the airport opened in 1967.

THE parents of a three-year-old girl have been arrested in Elche after she was genitally mutilated in a procedure done outside Spain. The man, 38, and woman. 26. were detained by the Policia Nacional on a charge of causing serious injury. The operation caused irreversible injuries and came to light when the child went for a routine medical check-up.

A BRITISH crew of a yacht anchored off the Alicante coast survived a lightning strike on Wednesday afternoon. The Informacion newspaper reported that the catamaran had been anchored for several days in the Cabo de la Huerta area. Four British people were on board the vessel when the the incident happened.
