Last week was a whirlwind for myself and members of the Boston Illini Club. “Hosting” Illini players and coaches, university staff, alumni and fans in Boston was an immense honor. BOSTON — Illinois fans tuned up for Thursday's Sweet 16 game with a pregame party at a pub near TD Arena. The lively scene at Hurricane's included Chancellor Robert Jones, who was asked about the turnout before the Illini were to play Iowa State. “I think it’s absolutely amazing to be in this great city and see so much orange and blue, and see that our fans are so excited, given that it has been (19) years we‘ve been in the Sweet 16.

BOSTON — One thing that so many Illini fans are accustomed to is the roller-coaster rise and fall of its two most visible programs — football and men’s basketball. But it would seem that since the 1990s, more dips than hills have happened. My time at Illinois from 2013 to 2017 was tough — and it seems I was not alone in this feeling. Coaching changes, player scandals and losing seasons added insult to injury.

Welcome to Boston, Illini fans. Just weeks before I graduated from the University of Illinois, I made a trip out east to tour Boston University and learn more about a graduate program. Within moments of stepping off the oldest subway line in the country and in sight of the famous Citgo sign near Fenway Park, I was hooked. The Los Angeles Times’ article from July 19, 2019, bore the screaming headline: “Sheriff Alex Villanueva’s son was hired to be a deputy seven months after his father took office.” My son applied to be a deputy when Jim McDonnell was sheriff, and for the record he joined the ranks of roughly 8,000 deputies when he graduated from the Sheriff’s Academy.
