If you know us, you know we love overwater bars. No, not beach bars (though we love those, too). We mean bars that are perched right above the water, offshore, accessed only by a small deck or bridge. It means you’re surrounded. While we loved the overwater options on a recent trip to Belize’s Ambergris Caye (a place we’ve called the Caribbean capital of overwater bars), one of our longstanding favorites is at the venerable Hotel Bakoua in Martinique.

For years, the self-styled “Nature Island” has been a well-kept secret. Lush, verdant, adventure-filled, the island in the Eastern Caribbean has largely been a hotspot for divers, hikers (drawn to the Caribbean’s longest hiking trail) and those in search of an ultra-laid back, pristine natural environment. But in recent years, the island has started to pick up steam — and now it’s coming off a banner year for tourism, according to new data from the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

The shopping in Philipsburg. The scene in Simpson Bay. The landings at Princess Juliana. The rum punch at Sunset. St Maarten has a style all its own, and it’s getting even easier to visit the “Friendly Island” this summer, Caribbean Journal has confirmed. For the summer season, JetBlue will be flying daily nonstop from New York John F Kennedy and Boston Logan to St Maarten. Even more? Negril isn’t like the rest of Jamaica. When you get here, you figure that out very quickly. The vibe is funky, eclectic. The beach is seven miles long and an endless party. If you head to the cliffs, you discover the town’s more mystical side. There’s just something different about Negril, and that extends to the hotels. No matter where you stay, you’ll find a place with character and personality, a hotel that’s as much a work of art as it is a place to stay.

The salsa. The rum. The mofongo. If you’ve been following Caribbean travel in the last half-decade, you know just how popular Puerto Rico has been, with surging arrivals that really haven’t shown any signs of slowing down. The secret? Lots of flights, and lots of cheap flights. The island has been adding new routes from across the mainland United States, and with lower fares than most of its Caribbean competitors, it’s been a formula that’s worked out rather well.

I don’t think @TGL gets enough credit, not just for successfully filling the gap between the NFL and baseball seasons but literally creating a brand new sport that’s instantly engaging and thrilling. Pretty remarkable. @StevenACohen2
