    According to the US Department of Commerce, in seasonally adjusted terms, total production fell at a month-on-month pace of 0.3% in March (consensus: -0.2%). Factory production was ahead by 0.3%, following a 1.0% gain in February, led by output of motor vehicles and for aerospace. Mining output was higher by 0.6% alongside, but was roughly flat for the latest three-month stretch, Commerce said. Utilities output meanwhile slumped by 5.8%.

    According to the US Department of Commerce, in seasonally adjusted terms, retail sales volumes increased at a month-on-month pace of 1.4% to reach $734.9bn (consensus: 1.3%). That compared to a 0.2% increase in February. Excluding motor vehicles and parts, sales were up by 0.5% (consensus: 0.3%) and if gasoline station sales were also left out then by 0.8%. Sales of motor vehicles and parts grew by 5.3% and those of building materials by 3.3%.

    According to Eurostat, in seasonally adjusted terms the euro area Consumer Price Index jumped at a month-on-month pace of 0.6% in March. In annual terms meanwhile, CPI was ahead by 2.2% or one tenth of a percentage point less than during the previous month. The annual rate of gain in core CPI on the other hand, which excludes food, energy, alcohol and tobacco prices, was steady at 2.4%. Both the headline and core CPI readings were in line with economists' forecasts.

    Beijing was open to talks with the US if Washington first committed to a number of conditions. Foremost among those, according to a person familiar with Chinese authorities' thinking, was that members of the US President's cabinet curb their contemptuous remarks, Bloomberg reported. China's government also wanted to see the US stake out a more "consistent" position and to address their concerns about US sanctions and Taiwan.
