Just days before US president Joe Biden was set to leave office, Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire deal after 15 months of war in Gaza. The Israeli cabinet approved the deal in the early hours of 18 January morning, which the Qatari prime minister announced as a three-phase agreement, set to take effect the following day. At least 12 people were treated for injuries after Israeli settlers attacked two occupied West Bank villages north of Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent. The attacks came after newly-inaugurated US president Donald Trump rescinded Biden-era executive orders that sanctioned far-right Israeli settlers for undermining peace in the territory. A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has officially begun ushering in an initial six-week period of calm after a devastating 15-month conflict. A last-minute delay by Hamas put off the start of the truce by nearly three hours and highlighted its fragility.
