Between 1881 and 1885, 17,000 Chinese men worked on the western section of the Canadian Pacific Railway, in perilous conditions and for 30 per cent less pay than whites. At least 600 died. Despite this, none were featured in the famous Last Spike photograph of its completion. A head tax was imposed shortly afterwards to discourage more Chinese from immigrating to Canada. Fixed at $50 in 1885, it soon increased to $100 and then $500 by 1903.
