AbstractControl of the molecular configuration at the interface of an organic heterojunction is key to the development of efficient optoelectronic devices. Due to the difficulty in characterizing these buried and (probably) disordered heterointerfaces, the interfacial structure in most systems remains a mystery. Here we demonstrate a synthetic strategy to design and control model interfaces, enabling their detailed study in isolation from the bulk material.

Elucidating the non-radiative losses encountered in intramolecular charge transfer compounds with benzodithiophene-4,8-dione acceptors A new yellow-emitting quadrupolar donor–π–acceptor–π–donor (D–π–A–π–D) molecule compound has been synthesised featuring benzo-[1,2-c:4,5-c’]dithiophene-4,8-dione as the acceptor.

AbstractThe coupling of excitons in π-conjugated molecules to high-frequency vibrational modes, particularly carbon–carbon stretch modes (1,000–1,600 cm−1) has been thought to be unavoidable1,2. These high-frequency modes accelerate non-radiative losses and limit the performance of light-emitting diodes, fluorescent biomarkers and photovoltaic devices.

AbstractHyperfluorescence shows great promise for the next generation of commercially feasible blue organic light-emitting diodes, for which eliminating the Dexter transfer to terminal emitter triplet states is key to efficiency and stability. Current devices rely on high-gap matrices to prevent Dexter transfer, which unfortunately leads to overly complex devices from a fabrication standpoint.

Operando study of the influence of small molecule acceptor on the morphology induced device degradation of organic solar cells with different π-π stacking Due to the development of efficient non-fullerene acceptors with excellent crystallinity and effective inter-mixing with donor polymers, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of organic solar cells (OSCs) have reached levels suitable for commercial implementation.
