In 1998, Carlsbad passed a ban on drive-thru restaurants. Existing ones could remain, but new ones were not allowed. Recently, the City Council voted 3-2 for a policy to allow more drive-thrus. “I'm excited,” Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Bret Schanzenbach said. He was among those in the business community advocating to lift the “outdated” ban. “We're excited as a chamber. We're excited that a path now exists," Schanzenbach said.

A recent San Diego County Vintners Association report shows softening sales in 2024, but the association remains optimistic despite changing American tastes. According to the report, local wineries generated $51.7 million in gross sales last year, a 5% decline over 2023. Sales, however, are still more than double what they were in 2016, the first year the data was available.

More than a dozen protesters gathered at El Cajon Civic Center on Tuesday to denounce an Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid in the city last week. The activists have filed a public records request demanding answers from city officials about their cooperation with federal immigration officials. The Office of State Fire Marshal this week released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for San Diego County, showing an increase in areas designated as “very high" fire risk. This is the first update in 14 years. State Fire Marshall Daniel Berlant said it took time to build an accurate model. "We worked several years to build the science and the technology to better and more accurately reflect the level of hazard that exists across San Diego and across all of California," he said.
