Carlsbad opens door for new drive-thrus, but with tight restrictions

In 1998, Carlsbad passed a ban on drive-thru restaurants. Existing ones could remain, but new ones were not allowed. Recently, the City Council voted 3-2 for a policy to allow more drive-thrus. “I'm excited,” Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Bret Schanzenbach said. He was among those in the business community advocating to lift the “outdated” ban. “We're excited as a chamber. We're excited that a path now exists," Schanzenbach said.
Wine sales slip in San Diego, but optimism remains among vintners

A recent San Diego County Vintners Association report shows softening sales in 2024, but the association remains optimistic despite changing American tastes. According to the report, local wineries generated $51.7 million in gross sales last year, a 5% decline over 2023. Sales, however, are still more than double what they were in 2016, the first year the data was available.

Updated fire maps show growing risk for San Diego’s urban areas

The Office of State Fire Marshal this week released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for San Diego County, showing an increase in areas designated as “very high" fire risk. This is the first update in 14 years. State Fire Marshall Daniel Berlant said it took time to build an accurate model. "We worked several years to build the science and the technology to better and more accurately reflect the level of hazard that exists across San Diego and across all of California," he said.

A political fight is brewing in the quiet “city in the country.” Councilmember Tony Blain was censured last month — a first for Poway, and now, he faces a recall effort. Blain’s been on the Poway City Council for three months. Scripps Health moves forward with plans for San Marcos hospital campus

Scripps Health announced plans Monday to build a new medical center campus in San Marcos, including an ambulatory care facility and acute care hospital. Plans for the Scripps San Marcos Medical Center campus are moving forward decades after Scripps Health purchased property in the North County city. "We acquired the San Marcos property 35 years ago, but it wasn't the right time to build,'' Chris Van Gorder, Scripps Health president and CEO, said in a statement.

Every day, Interstate 15 is packed with commuters traveling between Southwest Riverside County and San Diego for school or work — a drive that can sometimes take hours. The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is looking into providing some relief through a Rapid Bus route from Temecula to San Marcos. "The idea is reducing congestion on the freeways and the roads by offering alternatives to solo driving," said SANDAG senior transit planner Brian Lane.
People who need help detoxing from drugs or alcohol now have more options in North County

North County now has more beds for people to detox from drugs and alcohol addiction. The Escondido nonprofit Interfaith Community Services opened a 32-bed detox program this month. It previously operated an 11-bed program, but saw an opportunity to expand the program as part of a larger reorganization. "Last year, the city of Escondido passed a homelessness policy that really focused on the need for more addiction treatment beds," Interfaith's CEO Greg Anglea said.
