The bottom line of the mainstream analysis—especially on the Left, but also on much of the mainstream Right as well—is that things are really, really bad for African Americans, and they are unhappy about it and seeking large-scale change in American society to better address the problems they face.

The knee-jerk anti-death penalty position of the woke elites is one of the more predictable aspects of their ideology. Just as predictable is the language they use to talk about it: “Racist, racist, racist.” Also “inhumane and torture,” but mostly “racist,” the coin of the realm in contemporary America. The facts are otherwise, and voluminously so. There is no good evidence the death penalty is racist in application.

I learned about the “Poverty Simulation” by means of a colleague’s letter to campus announcing such an event at the central Pennsylvania liberal arts university where I work. My colleague explained that “many families” in the local communities around the campus are in poverty.

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy is complicated. His ability to invoke Christian moral philosophy as part of his activism was felt across the political spectrum. His embrace of Christian pacifism as a method for challenging the Jim Crow regime gave the early civil disobedience movement a moral authority that is hard to deny. “Bomb our homes and threaten our children, and we shall still love you,” he wrote.

In the mediasphere, the conversation on DEI in higher ed is mostly about, e.g., the fear that conservative “politicization” will drive enrollments down.
