IntroductionThe development of new or improved vaccines is a key vehicle to improve health outcomes across the world, with follow-on benefits to equity, economic capacity and societal function.1 2 With the emergence of new diseases (eg, COVID-19),3 or the resurgence of existing diseases (eg, polio),4 the importance of rapid introduction or reintroduction of vaccines is increasingly evident.

Signed on August 16, 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) addresses longstanding vaccine cost barriers by guaranteeing coverage for routine vaccinations, without cost sharing, for all adults enrolled in Medicaid and Medicare. Once these coverage barriers are removed, approximately 9 out of 10 Americans will have access to vaccines at no cost. However, policy makers must not stop there in their efforts to improve adult vaccination rates.
