The number of people using Gaelic has increased across Scotland despite a decline in the language's heartland, according to the the latest census data. Experts say the increase in Gaelic medium education (GME) accounts for the rise. However, Gaelic is now a minority language in the Western Isles - while 52% reported speaking Gaelic in 2011, the figure in 2022 was 45%. Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes told BBC Scotland that Scottish Gaelic was part of a "modern, diverse Scotland".

A truly lovely man. Exceptionally talented and what a great broadcasting voice. Very sad news indeed.

I am very sorry to hear that the former STV and BBC broadcaster Colin MacKay has died. I started out my own career answering the phones for his Radio Clyde phone in in 1996/97. I will miss his kindness, courtesy and his encyclopaedic knowledge of political history. https://t.co/1b5nGN7tii
