Two weeks ago, the Institute for Intelligent Computing and Alibaba Group published an image-to-video model called Animate Anyone.[xv] The model transforms an input reference image and a pose sequence into a video. Unlike in previous image-to-video research, Animate Anyone introduced a feature extraction network called ReferenceNet that captures details from the original reference image in each video frame generated.

While artificial intelligence (AI) language models can improve in many ways, a recent paperi by researchers from Microsoft and OpenAI illustrates the importance of posing questions to models in the right way. As shown below in the gray dotted line on the left, earlier this year smaller AI models “fine-tuned” on specialized data caught up to OpenAI's state-of-the-art GPT-4 model on a medical licensing exam test.

Last week, the Biden Administration issued a broad Executive Order[iv] related to artificial intelligence (AI), effective immediately, with compliance deadlines in the next three to nine months. The order subjects all private large training models to reporting and testing requirements and requires cloud computing and other large datacenter providers to validate and monitor customer identity and behavior. The order also places stringent requirements on AI systems that use biological data.
