A dozen cats darted out of the eastern gates of the Acropolis, then scurried behind a familiar figure pulling a shopping cart. Kefalopoulou, co-founder of Athens-based stray cat welfare organization Nine Lives Greece, warmly greeted each one by name, ladling out portions of food to Betty, Museum and Handsome, Scarface, Carrot, Risotto and the others. Then her eyes lit up at the sight of one fluffy customer with thick brown-and-white fur.

Improbably, Greece fielded a baseball team to compete at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where more than a few mystified locals in attendance could be seen cheering wildly at foul balls and soft popups to the infield. They could be forgiven because most Greeks had no experience with the sport, which was as hard to find as an open supermarket on a Sunday. Baseball, essentially, did not exist in Greece.

A young harpist has performed her version of a 2,000-year-old ancient Greek song, thought to be the oldest complete piece of music, which was dedicated to two lovers. In the video, 28-year-old Melegie strums the harp as she plays the song, “Seikhilos Epitaph.” Her pink hair is modern, but she is clad in a white robe harkening back to ancient times and is perched on rocks by the sea. SWNS, a news and media content agency, reported the story in 2022.
