“I was born in Tupungato, Argentina, a traditional town in the Mendoza region at the foot of the Andes, where wines have been made since the arrival of the first European immigrants in the nineteenth century. Growing up, I remember annual grape harvests, when the streets were filled with fruit from the vines, and there was a smell of fermentation in the air. The vines grew everywhere, and as children we ate grapes of every colour for days.

“I’ve always felt a connection with the ocean. I completed my PhD, on seabirds’ movement decisions, at the University of Milan in 2022. The following year, I joined the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) at Ozzano dell’Emilia, Italy, as a researcher. In this photograph, taken in 2021, I was on an expedition that forms part of a collaborative project between ISPRA and the University of Milan.

“In this photo, I’m visiting a once-abandoned well, known as the Three Trees Well, north of Bengaluru, India. In the past, this type of well would have been filled with concrete and the land used to build properties, but thanks to community outreach efforts it has been protected and cleaned by local community members. Their work has been rewarded by the well reconnecting with the below-ground aquifer and bringing water to the community again.
