Access Now and more than 20 organizations are demanding that the government and all internet service providers (ISPs) operating in the country uphold human rights and ensure unhindered access to the internet throughout the election period. Access to the internet during key national events such as elections is crucial to civic participation.

In 2022, authorities shut down the internet across 35 countries — the highest number ever recorded in a single year — at least 187 times. These protracted and maliciously targeted attacks on human rights were deployed to wipe out democratic movements, crush people power, and provide cover for violence. Leaders in Myanmar and Ethiopia are already replicating these oppressive tactics in 2023.

India topped the global list of internet shutdowns for the fifth year in a row in 2022 with at least 84 disruptions, international digital rights organisation Access Now said in a report released on Tuesday in collaboration with the #KeepItOn coalition.
