As a journalist, I’ve spent years writing about the worst tragedies people can endure. But nothing can prepare you for the moment one of those tragedies hits your own family. On Saturday, my brother-in-law Dave Hogbin was taken by a crocodile in a horrific, freak accident during a dream holiday with his young family in Far North Queensland. After an agonising two-day ordeal, his remains were finally found on Monday night.

Outrage is spreading after it emerged that two men are potentially facing the death penalty after being charged with “aggravated homosexuality” under Uganda’s draconian new anti-gay laws. Homosexuality was already illegal in the highly conservative east African nation, but earlier this year, Uganda rolled out a brutal crackdown on the LGBTQI community after passing even stricter legislation via the Anti-Homosexuality Act.
