PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Arizona Supreme Court is upholding the suspension of a top prosecutor for mishandling cases against Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020. As a Maricopa County prosecutor at the time, April Sponsel was involved in charging protesters detained during these demonstrations, including Richard Villa. Initial police reports said Villa threw fencing at police officers and recommended Villa be charged with a class 6 felony for assaulting a police officer.

Since launching the six-month pilot program in April, about 40 Scottsdale police officers have generated reports using AI. The department estimates it has saved them about 30 minutes each time.
