MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — The revival of an old, controversial immigration enforcement program is drawing sharp criticism. It’s called 287(g) and basically lets local law enforcement act as immigration officers in certain situations. Six Arizona law enforcement agencies have signed up, including Mesa police. Under the 287(g) program, ICE can partner with local agencies through three models. They are the Jail Enforcement model, the Task Force model and the Warrant Service Officer program.

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — More than half of the heat-related deaths in Maricopa County last year were tied to substance abuse. The Valley’s extreme heat was linked to the deaths of more than 600 people in the Valley; over 300 of them also had drugs or alcohol in their system. “Top one is fentanyl, second is methamphetamine, third would be cocaine,” said Phoenix Police Cmdr. Steve Martos. With his role in the department’s Drug Enforcement Bureau, he knows the signs of someone under the influence.

CHANDLER, AZ (AZFamily) — Beginning this summer, the East Valley will have overnight relief on the hottest days. Chandler will be the second city in Maricopa County to offer a cool place to sleep. In Chandler last year, eight people died from the heat. It was a decrease from the year prior, when the intense heat killed 14 people.

A Gilbert family said it happened to them last week and shared their warning, hoping it helps other families avoid the mess. Christine Dompier said she was at her Gilbert home with her three-year-old on Friday, watching TV, when the smoke detector suddenly started going off.
