The motivation to write this article stems from a series of grand rounds in our Department of Surgery. Each year, the graduating chief residents are invited to deliver grand rounds on a topic of their choosing. This year, three consecutive grand rounds presentations from chief residents focused on education and surgical mentorship. Listening to these talks made two things abundantly clear.

Miller and colleagues published their work1 on the quantification of anterior and posterior fascial release after posterior component separation (PCS) and transversus abdominis release (TAR) using a proprietary, sterilizable tensiometer on anesthetized patients with ventral hernia. To our knowledge, this is the largest study of its kind in our review.2-4 Their findings demonstrated that anterior fascial tension was most impacted by the retrorectus dissection.
