Coastal erosion is a rapidly growing threat to both the natural environment and the 600 million people living in low-elevation coastal zones around the world (1). The loss of land and habitat, as well as the deterioration of infrastructure and economic assets, are just a few of the many challenges that follow (2–4). These challenges have been further intensified by climate change through rising sea levels, more frequent high-tide flooding, and powerful storm surges (1).
