‘I’ve always been a displayer. I think it probably stems from my mother, who was a great collector of things. Display to me means decoration, whether you’re decorating your body or your home. You can wake up and feel that you just want to hunker down and wear very cosy clothes, or decide that you want to make an impact. I think it’s the same with your living space. Everything that I own evokes a memory: there’s a reason why I bought it or a thought process behind it.

From a collection of afrofuturist timber stools to a series of vessels sculpted from recycled waste glass, this year’s Ralph Saltzman Prize shortlist spans a broad range of mediums, approaches and disciplines, reflecting the diversity of the current design scene. The Design Museum’s annual prize was launched in 2022 by Lisa Saltzman in memory of her father, intending to celebrate and nurture upcoming international design talent.
